For over a decade, I've worked as an Attendance Teacher within the New York City Department of Education — one of the largest and most complex school systems in the world. My job isn't to send letters or log absences. My job is to knock on doors, sit with families, understand what's really going on, and find a path back to school.
I've worked with families navigating homelessness, immigration fears, untreated mental health challenges, domestic instability, and deep distrust of institutions. I've helped schools build attendance teams from the ground up and coached staff on how to engage parents without alienating them.
